Chapter 35

“Paege, watch out!” I hear his voice before I realise what’s happening, but it’s too late. My stomach lurches out of my body as the ground beneath me opens, and I’m falling down, down into a pit of endless darkness.

I throw my arms up to try to grab for anything at all, but there is nothing but a swirling vortex of darkness, and I hear a familiar blood-curdling scream echoing through the emptiness as I continue to fall. It’s mine. The weight of my pack pulls me further into the nothingness, and my legs and arms thrash about. The air whips at me from every angle, and my mind races with fear as the world spins and whirls around me.

Just when I think all is lost, and I am about to close my eyes to succumb to the inevitable fate, a shadow appears in my blurry vision. Wings. Large, glorious, beautiful wings.

Laz.

Laz is coming for me at incredible speed.

He is coming for me.

He draws closer, reaching out for me, and I drive an arm out for him, grasping for purchase and willing the length of my arm to extend to meet his. A second later, fingers entwine with mine, then wrap around my hand, and he tugs, hauling me in close to him. I cling to his body, holding on for my life. Once he has me secure within his grip, he quickly shifts direction and springs upward. My stomach jumps up through my throat, trying to escape along with my bellowing screams, and my heart smashes at my chest with a determined aggression.

I close my eyes and bury my head into his chest, muffling my shrieks and cries as he flies back up to the cavern above, bringing me back to life as he soars higher toward the faint light above us. My body jolts, bones and muscles groaning as we hit something hard. The world continues to roll around me, but I’m immediately enveloped in a weighted silken warmth, a feeling I know. I don’t have to open my eyes to know that we’re back on solid ground, and he’s wrapped his feathered wings around me. I lean into him, accepting his embrace for what it is. Safety. As I gasp for air, warm tears cascade down my frosted face, but Laz’s cocoon pulls me in closer, bringing me comfort and shelter.

“Paege, Paege?” I hear muffled cries, but I’m still not ready to move.

“Back off,” Laz snarls.

“Let her go, Laz.”

“Touch me again, Wolf, and I will throw you down that hole myself. Now back off!”

I wiggle against Laz’s soft wings. They shudder, and he loosens his grip. “Are you alright in there, Paege?” he asks gently.

“I—I think so,” I mutter, self-scanning my body, searching for any signs of injury or pain.

Laz releases a wing, and I open my lids. Slowly lifting my head, amber eyes, soft with worry, meet mine. His pupils dance with colours of yellows, greens, and blues from the crystal light show that the cavern is still putting on display.
